PRESS RELEASE

The DOK.fest München 2021 – entirely online

Munich, March 29, 2021

The 36. DOK.fest München, Germany’s biggest documentary film festival, presents its entire programme online. Until most recently, the DOK.fest München team had been preparing for a dual edition, planning to show films both on location in cinemas in Munich as well as online. In light of the current state of the corona pandemic this dual concept is no longer viable. Upon the recommendation of their sponsors – representatives of the Free State of Bavaria, the state capital Munich and the FFF Bayern – and with the approval of the board of the association Internationales Dokumentarfilmfestival München e.V. the festival's management has decided to host this year's event, as has been done last year, exclusively online. It will be extended for one week and takes place from 5 – 23 May.

Daniel Sponsel, Festival & managing director: “We’re aware of our multifaceted responsibility: While we absolutely would love to get back into the cinema – our team having prepared a dual edition with great dedication and effort – the situation has once again worsened and we have to consider our social responsibility. We will be in lockdown until the middle of April, there are travel restrictions and due to current predictions, we are not optimistic. Even if cultural events could again take place by the beginning of May, considering the necessary time it takes to prepare, as well as the logistical challenges and costs that have to be accounted for, it is not feasible to organize a festival that will do justice to the high expectations. Therefore, we will present our programme entirely online: important films that are worth seeing, encounters with the filmmakers as well as interactive events and award ceremonies.”

The DOK.fest München @home shows 130 of the best international documentary films of the year. Four big competitions present the highlights of international filmmaking, with 16 awards to be given away.

Guest region section: Kanada

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE THIS PLACE, ANYPLACE © DOK.fest München

The guest region section showcases seven documentary films from and about Canada, a country between megacities and indigenous culture, between liberalism and monarchy. The dream of freedom, but also its inner contradictions have shaped Canada substantially. Throughout the series this tension, but also the country’s dynamics and vibrancy can be experienced up close. The films deal with a wide range of issues, from the protests against police brutality in Calgary, to sexual abuse within the catholic church, ex-convicts’ long journey back into society, the fight of the First Nations for recognition, feminism and strong women as well as visions about a city of the future. The guest region section is part of Canada's cultural program as the honorary guest of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020/21 and is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Telefilm Canada and the government of Canada.

Homage

PRIVATE UNIVERSE © DOK.fest München

An Homage is dedicated to the Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková. In her movies the master of long-term observation dives deep into private universes. The lives of the others reflect back on the self, on the individual’s small dramas and big moments. Helena Třeštíková’s films sharpen the perception of important details, and in many cases for the perception of happiness. She continues to mirror and reflect contemporary history in her work. In the context of the Homage, the DOK.fest München presents films from the director’s different creative phases, amongst them MARRIAGE STORIES (1987/2005), MALLORY (2015) as well as FORMAN VS. FORMAN (2019), a film about the great filmmaker Milos Forman.

DOK.forum and DOK.education

The industry platform DOK.forum @ home offers – live and online – a marketplace that connects filmmakers and decision makers from German-speaking regions and helps get new projects off the ground. Moreover, there will be public workshops, case studies, and panels on current topics in the field of documentary work.

The education platform DOK.education offers digital teaching units including films, video seminars and supporting material for teachers and pupils in Bavaria. In addition, kids and adolescents can take part in YouTube and camera workshops.

You can find the official schedule and presale for the festival online from April 2021 at www.dokfest-muenchen.de.
